Linguistic Interactions in the Ecclesiastical Vocabulary of Armeno-Turkish
Abstract
This article examines code-mixing in the ecclesiastical vocabulary of Armeno-Turkish, exploring the linguistic interaction between Armenian and Turkish in the religious written heritage of the Armenian community of the Ottoman Empire. Based on Armeno-Turkish religious texts, the study analyzes the use of Armenian ecclesiastical lexical items within a Turkish linguistic framework, with particular attention to their morphological and syntactic integration and the patterns of code-mixing.
The analysis demonstrates that Armenian ecclesiastical vocabulary retained a distinctive role in Armeno-Turkish religious writing despite the predominance of Turkish as the language of the texts. It highlights the ways in which Armenian ecclesiastical terms functioned within Turkish discourse and illustrates the dynamics of linguistic contact reflected in their usage. The study also considers the relationship between language choice, ecclesiastical tradition, and the preservation of Armenian religious and cultural identity.
The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the linguistic characteristics of Armeno-Turkish, the mechanisms of language contact and code-mixing, and the role of ecclesiastical vocabulary in the preservation of the Armenian linguistic and cultural heritage.
