About the incorrect relations and usage of the words "terrorism and terrorist" in the modern world - reasons and goals (examples from the World and Georgia)
Abstract
In the 21st century, terrorism remains the world's most important challenge. The development of technologies and the processes of globalization have additionally given rise to such forms of radicalization as cyber-terrorism and narco-terrorism. However, political, individual, and fanatical terrorist organizations and acts still occupy a leading place in this area of crime.
Terrorism and terrorist organizations came under special attention in 2013 as a result of the appearance of the "Terrorist State" ISIL (ISIS) on the world stage. After the control of this organization was established over part of the territories of Syria and Iraq, its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced the creation of a state (ISIL), which was an unprecedented event. In the second decade of the 21st century, the words "terrorism" and "terrorist" were one of the most frequently used and most commonly mentioned terms by politicians and the media. Therefore, the study of the issue is very relevant in the Georgian and global contexts.
Since the 18th century, the terms "terrorism and terrorist" have changed or renewed their meaning several times. E.g. During the Great French Revolution, "terrorist" was associated with partisans, subjects fighting against the government, while "terrorism" was synonymous with state terror and violence. In the 20s of the 20th century, for instance, in the USA, in the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune, we find article titles according to which "terrorist and terrorism" were associated with gangsters and street gangs. The establishment of the words "terrorist and terrorism" in the modern sense started in the 70s of the 20th century and mainly carries political content (except for private, subjective cases).
Since 2001, terrorist acts have become the most serious challenge for the civilized world. The space of activities of terrorists, the fields of activities, methods and the number of terrorists have increased. At the same time, several facts and events around the world have been labeled as terrorist acts in the public or media space, which either did not have such qualifications from the beginning or did not receive them later (e.g. Muammar Gaddafi's public speeches and interviews in 2011; President Poroshenko's inaugural speech in 2014; in 2020, the attack on the Bank of Georgia in Zugdidi, etc.).
The paper aims to present the cases of incorrect relations and usage of the words "terrorism and terrorist" based on the events that happened in the modern period and their evaluations. Factual, juridical or political argumentation of the fallacy of using these words concerning specific events. Also, an explanation of the reasons for the mistakes made and the goals according to examples and cases. In addition, the intended purposes of using the words "terrorism and terrorist" with broad and narrow meanings
