Social Stratification of Georgia in the Period of Transition
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgian society underwent a profound transformation, adopting new norms and shifting toward a European orientation. Nevertheless, little research has examined the issue of social stratification in the country. This project seeks to identify and describe social milieus in Georgia, drawing on survey data from EVS, ISSP, and Eurobarometer spanning from 1992 to the present.
Social milieus are conceptualized as value-based social groups shaped by lifestyle, class, identity, and attitudes. The study will analyze variables such as political orientation, education, income, value scales, life satisfaction, and identity markers, framed in a comparative European perspective. The methodology involves clustering and mapping milieus along two axes—class and values. The research aims to contribute both to academic knowledge and to policy planning by providing a nuanced understanding of Georgia’s social structure.
